In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth…And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… - Genesis 1:1, 26
“And now let us believe in a long year that is given to us, new, untouched, full of things that have never been, full of work that has never been done, full of tasks, claims, and demands; and let us see that we learn to take it without letting fall too much of what it has to bestow upon those who demand of it necessary, serious, and great things.”
- Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1963) German poet, in a letter to his wife Clara Rilke dated January 1, 1907
A New Year of “things that have never been!” Yes, that is true enough, for we do not know what all this year has in store. The very best of plans are just that at best. The twists and turns are certain to come. The unforeseen victories and celebrations as well! Yet, with all of the new things that have never been we can also be assured that this year brings with it things that have always been, from the very beginning!
We talk of and think about resolutions and goals, and that is a healthy thing to do; but a great place to start with that is to go back to the beginning to the original resolution and purpose God gave man on Day One, or, more accurately I suppose, Day Six! What was it? God gave man:
1) A Distinction (v.26-27) – To reflect the divine image on the earth! To be God’s representative!
2) An Operation (v.28) – Be productive, make the earth work for you. Work meaningful work!
3) A Provision (v.29) – Everything you need is supplied! Therefore, don’t get caught up in the wrong priorities, worrying over what you will eat and what you will wear and how much stockpile you have!
Now, friends, yes, sin ruined this sublime and perfect world. That is why Jesus came. Through Christ, His name, His finished work, His supply, we can again fulfil our purpose! That’s why he said to us, “Abide in me” (John 15:4).
